Appropriate- technology mitigation

Objective:

Pilot and test informal settlement community-managed landslide risk mitigation techniques at the community and individual household level, with potential to be rolled out on a wider scale through community-based researchers and trainers. This objective is a benefit to other academics because it will provide further knowledge of the scope for household-based mitigation of landslide risk in informal settlements, based on evidence from pilot tests – which will be compared with other related experiences worldwide to consolidate a knowledge base on this alternative approach.

Methods:

To address this research objective, a pilot scheme will be tested at the individual household level. Appropriate technology solutions will be developed and implemented in collaboration between the community and the architecture and geology/geotechnics research team experts to mitigate landslide risk in 3 existing informally-built dwellings. The project will train the volunteer households to implement the measures and will provide the materials. The community-based monitoring exercise will include regular measurement of key indicators around the 3 pilot dwellings. An evaluation workshop with the community-based monitoring team, volunteer pilot households, community leaders, public and third sector agencies and the research team will assess the pilot schemes and their potential to be replicated at scale. This evaluation will include considering the scope for community-based ‘training of trainers’ and potential to make long-term support available from academia and public and third sector agencies.
